Who's Who

Source: Weekly Argus News, April 2, 1892 p8

The following letter from Miss Lucy Leslie to her mother will explain itself and clears her entirely of any wrong doing: St. Louis, March 24 1892 My Dear Mother Ė Received your letter this morning and was surprised somewhat to get the piece in the paper, as I wasnít at the hotel but 3 days and then had to stay there until Madam Alphonse, the head lady here in the house, made room for me. The house was near the hotel and the reason there was a sensation about me in the hotel was that on Wednesday night my room was next o some manís room. I donít know the man and I called the watchman. Mr. Ritchie was at the hotel that night but that was nothing to me. I am very sorry you would worry about me as Ma you know I am not deserving of any scandal and besides I wasnít the only millinery lady in the hotel from Straussí wholesale house. There were two other ladies from the wholesale house at the same time and I went back and forth with them all the time. Now donít worry about me as I am in good care and with the Madam Alphones every day and night. I am very much surprised at the sensation in Crawfordsville. I never have been anything but a lady in every respect and never expect to be otherwise. Now donít worry about me, as I can and will always be as I have always been. I am very sorry to think people canít let me alone. The people at the hotel were very nice to me and the night clerk called me to the parlor and apologized to me for that man disturbing me that night. He fired the man and wouldnít let him have a room there any more. I will leave here Saturday for Connersville, Ind. Donít give yourself any worry as I am well cared for and in good peopleís hands. Your loving daughter, Lucy..
