Who's Who

JOHN BRUCH

Source: Saturday, Feb 6, 1932 Crawfordsville Journal-Review

New Ross --John BRUCH, 89, a veteran of the Civil War died at 3:30 o´clock this afternoon in the house he himself constructed in 1874, ˝ of a mile north of New Ross. He had been in failing health for several years and was taken seriously ill with a complication of diseases Jan 25 the day he reached his 89th milestone. Mr. Bruch was born Jan 25, 1843 on a farm near Corydon in Harrison Co IN, the son of Michael and Rachel Bruch. He was never married. In 1872 he settled alone near New Ross, later sending for his mother and sister. He was a carpenter as well as farmer and the home he erected on his farm in 1874 he is still in remarkably good condition. A member of the Union forces in the Civil War, Mr. Bruch always held the opinion that it is "an honor to serve one´s country,' and one should not accept compensation for war duty unless he is forced to. It is said he was invited several times to take advantage of a pension fund but refused. The only immediate survivor is Phillip Bruch, a brother who lived at the Bruch home north of here. Brief funeral services will be held 2 o´clock Sunday afternoon Rev JH Gardner of Mace officiating. Burial in Pisgah Cemetery, 3miles north of New Ross. - typed by kbz
