Letter home to parents from WILBUR G. HOUK
Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal Friday, December 3, 1918
"Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Houk have received a letter from their son, Pvt WG Houk, who was with the American forces in the last fighting before the signing of the armitice by Germany. The letter follows: Somewhere in France, November 16"
Dear Mother and Father: Hello mamma, how are you? Well, I hope. Well I am feeling fine and getting along the same as ever. I was on the last big drive that made the kaiser through up the sponge and come out without a scratch. I am taking care of myself the best I can and am looking forward to being home in the near future. I am also sending a German helmet for a relic today, but it will be some time before it gets there. Well mamma the old US will be dry after December 1. So you and papa had better make a lot of wine and cider when I get home for I sure will stay around old C'ville pretty close when I get back. I haven't heard from you but once since I have been over here and I haven't written you very often, but I write every chance I get. Well, give everybody my best regards for the present for I am hopeful that I will be home for Xmas dinner. That will be fine won't it? Well this will be all for this time with love and best wishes to all I remain as ever, Your son, WILBUR
