SALUDA JONES BALDWIN

RIP - such a very sad death

Source: Waveland Independent, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana April 22, 1932
George Slavens went to Clinton Falls, Monday afternoon to attend the funeral of Mrs. Elijah Baldwin. The funeral was held in the M.P. Church, which was crowded, owing to the tragic death of Mrs. Baldwin. The Baldwins had been living for three years on the old Slaven home place. Elijah Baldwin, of Clinton Falls, cut his wife's throat on Sunday and then made an attempt to cut his own throat and failed - which was a pity. On Wednesday, he pled guilty to murder in the second degree and was sent to the pen for life! - kbz

Greencastle, Ind April 18 - Said by the police to have objected to his wife's singing at church affairs, Elish Baldwin, 66, prominent Putnam County farmer, Sunday slashed the throat of his spouse, Mrs. Saluda Baldwin, 45, and then attempted to kill himself. Mrs. Baldwin died in a hospital two hours later. The attack, witnessed by their 12-year-old son, Morris and Mrs. Baldwin's elder mother, Mrs. Minnie Jones, occured in the Baldwin home northwest of here as Mrs. Baldwin was dressing to sing at a funeral. Baldwin accompanied his wife here after the attack, and surrendered to authorities. His self inflicted cuts were only minor wounds. Relatives said he had threatened to kill his wife on other occasions. The Putnam County grand jury will be called into session tomorrow to investigate the case. - kbz

Greencastle, Ind - April 20 -- Elisha Baldwin, 66, who quarreled with his wife last Sunday and slashed her throat because he objected to her singing at a funeral today pleased guilty to a charge of second degree murder. Judge James P. Hughes sentenced Baldwin to serve a life term in the state prison. Baldwin was indicted yesterday and entered the plea of guilty when arraigned today. His wife, Mrs. Saluda Baldwin was 46 years old. -- kbz

Note: Elisha died in 1946 and of course we know about Saluda (Saludie on tombstone) -- both have small, very pretty stones in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana. Both say, "I love you" which is rather ironic in lieu of the circumstances. Later, I got to thinking that probably one or more of their children put them up.

Children were: sons Clone & Morris. Daughters, Mary Josephine & Pauline. May have been more, only ones I know.
