Gus Bappert, one of Crawfordsville's oldest and most respect citizens, died Sunday morning at his home on So. Green St. from the effects of a stroke of paralysis which he suffered several weeks ago. Mr. Bappert was one of the best known men in Montgomery County. By trade a tinner, he was called to do work in all parts of this County and in the half century of his life here he had built up a reputation for honest work and reliability that was proverbial. His acquaintance was wide and every acquaintance was a friend. Augustine Bappert was born in the province of Hessencastle, Germany, April 1, 1834 and was a son of Mr. & Mrs. John Bappert. He came to the US in 1843, landing in NY on May 18. From NY he went to Buffalo, where he remained until 1856, when he came to this city and has since resided In Montgomery County, Indiana. Four years after his coming to this city he took out naturalization papers and was declared an American citizen Sep 14, 1860. After coming here he worked at his trade as a tinner with the firms of Southard & Sharp, and Robb & Mahorney. later he formed a partnership with John B. Robb and more recently with his son, James, with whom he was in business at the time of his death. On Nov 8, 1859, he was married in this city to Miss Fredericka Hartugh (sic), and to this union came six children, four of whom survive. The living members of the family are John William, of Telluride, Colo; Mrs. DW Willis of north of this city; James Edward, at home, and Ida Marie, at home. The deceased children are Minnie Katheryn, who died in childhood and Emma, who died in 1901. Shortly after his coming to this city, Mr. Bappert became a member of the Masonic lodge. A brother, Melchoir Bappert, is living in Germany. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock from the Masonic Temple and will be in charge of the Rev. LP Marshall, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. OH Jones and Mrs. WC Hessler will sing. Burial.... (sorry, the obit. got cut off) - kbz
