VERN BARKER

LINDEN - Vern Barker, 83, of Linden, died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday in Home Hospital at Lafayette. He had been ill since last July. A resident of the New Richmond and Linden communities, he had been in the plumbing and heating, battery and tire businesses. He attended Linden - Kirkpatrick United Methodist Church and was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 697 and the OES chapter here. A son of Jess and Martha J. Bacus Barker, he was born in Fountain County on Aug. 9, 1885. He attended schools in that county and was married to Hazel Hays on Feb. 21, 1925. She died Sept. 28, 1959. On June 25, 1968 he was wed to F. Laverne Bailey, who survives. Surviving besides his wife are three stepchildren, Warren L. Bailey of Springfield, Va., Gene P. Bailey of Dallas, Tex., and Mrs. Elmer Counts of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; a brother, Morton Barker of North Liberty; a sister, Mrs. Hannah Stochr of Decatur, Ill., nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Hays of Bedford. Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Helms Funeral Home. Revs. Dale Wilson and Mina Lee Davis will officiate, with burial in Walnut Hills Cemetery at Odon, Ind. Masonic rites are at 8 o'clock tonight at the funeral home, where friends may call-- jlr
