The Charlotte, S. C. Observer contains the following regarding the death of a boy who at one time lived here, being related to Mrs. George D. Hurley:

“Charles Carroll Baker died at the residence of his grandfather, Dr. Richard B. Baker, at Hickory, on Tuesday the 25th day of June. He was the son of Dr. Beverly Earle Baker and Katherine Carroll Baker. He was born November 26, 1894. He was a most remarkable child. An invalid for a large part of his life, confined to his bed, lying in one position, wholly unable to move. His sufferings were intense enough to crush any one of mature years. But he bore them all with marvelous patience and fortitude, with a heroism I have never seen equaled. His mind was unusually strong—far beyond his years. He would converse intellectually and interestingly upon those subjects, which, ordinarily, are much above the capacity of children of his age. He loved to dwell upon the wisdom and goodness of God—upon His justice and His love. He felt that his afflictions, though very great, and very hard to bear, yet came from God, and that his Heavenly Father would do no wrong. He never lost hope. He was at all times cheerful and happy, rejoicing always, in everything, as it seemed to me giving God thanks. He was fully ripe for Heaven. He had the courage of a lion. He fought, undauntedly, a good fight, under circumstances, too, that would have appalled the bravest hearts, yielding only to Him to whom all must yield. -s
