Barnett - Nathaniel

Wednesday morning, Dr. Barcus, county coroner, was summond to the farm of Nathaniel Barnett, two and a half miles south of Wesley, to hold an inquest on the dead body of the owner of the place. That morning Mr. Barnett who was a respected citizen about 58 years of age arose as usual and went out to the barn presumably to feed the stock. When breakfast was ready he was called. But, as he frequently delayed his appearance at meals, the family did not wait for him but proceeded to eat. Upon the conclusion of the meal as Mr. Barnett had not yet come, his stepson, JN Gilkey, walked out to the barn to see what caused the delay. He was horrified to find the dead body of Mr. Barnett lying face downward on the floor, life having evidently been extince for some time. Young Mr. Gilkey hastily gave the alarm and the neighbors were soon on the spot. From all appearances it is safe to say that the deceased came to his death by self administered poison, the same being carbolic acid. An almost empty bottle of this drug was found lying under his body and Mr. Gilkey states that when he turned the body over the odor of the acid was very strong. Mr. Barnett was a man of very despondent nature and his wife had long feared such an ending, although he promised her over a year ago that he would not take his life. She once took a package of morphine away from him and only last Saturday a druggist at Waynetown refused to sell him this drug because of his queer actions. Nothing he said or did about home just previous to his death, however, would indicate that he seriously contemplated such a deplorable step. He had been severely distressed, however, for some time by some debts. He leave a wife and one daughter by a former wife. Dr. Barcus together with Drs Hurt and Hamilton of Waynetown held a post mortem examination on the body of Nathaniel Barnett Wednesday and found his death was due to a self administered dose of carbolic acid. - kbz

A large crowd attended the funeral of Nathaniel Barnet at Union Chapel. Brother Vanderment conducted the services, which were very touching, the text being “Only a step between life and death.” - thanks to "s"
As administrator I will offer the personal property of the late Nathaniel Barnett at public sale on Tuesday Sept 17, 1895 (sic – dated Oct 3 – odd) at the old home place, 2 ½ miles south of Wesley station and 3 ½ miles northwest of Yountsville on the township line. Said property consists of 4 head of good work horses; 4 good milk cows; 2 fresh; one two-year-old and 1 yearling steer; 2 spring calves; 25 head of sheep; 1 buck; 13 shoats and 3 sows; 4 good young boars; 6 tons of hay in the mow; corn in the crib and field; oats and what in the bin; 2 buggies; spring and farm wagons; 1 Deering binder; plows and implements of all kinds; household and kitchen furniture. Terms: credit of 12 months on all sums over $5; $5 and under cash in hand; purchaser giving note with approved freehold security.
