Darlington Ind May 7 – Madison Barton, age 86 a Civil War veteran died at his home here Tuesday of old age. He was a resident of this place all his life and was widely known throughout the county. He was born near Linden and was 86 years old the day he died. Mr. Barton was a member of General Wilder’s brigade, having served in Co I 72nd Regiment. In September 1862 at Gallitan, Tenn while the regiment was in pursuit of Wheeler, Mr. Barton was severely wounded and later forced to have a leg amputated. Following this injury, he was discharged from service. He was the first town marshal in Darlington and held this position for many years. He was appointed when the town was incorporated in 1882. His wife died many years ago. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Malissa Bolser of Darlington and a niece, Mrs. Lou Burk. Funeral services will be held at the family home Friday afternoon at 2:30. Burial in the IOOF Cemetery.
