Mrs. Catherine Barton, aged 97 years died of old age last week at her home in Darlington. She had been sick for several weeks but previous to that time had been remarkably well preserved and active for one of her years, possessing more energy in fact than many people of 50. - kbz

Catherine Barton was born in Pennsylvania Oct 21, 1804 died Oct 22, 1897. She was the oldest person living here at the time of her death. As her family are not sure of the correctness of the date of her birth a good many think she was older. For a good many years she lived with her husband near Linden, where 8 children were born to them, 5 of whom are living, two of them, Mrs. Malissa Bolser and Madison Barton here in town. Some 20 years ago her husband and she parted, she with her son Madison coming here to live, she doing all the house work up to her last sickness. She was a kind and loving mother and good neighbor so that all had a kind word for Grandma Barton. She was laid away in the IOOF Cemetery Sunday. Short services were held at the house, Rev. FP Trotter officiating. - kbz
