Last evening at 5 o'clock at the home of John Skidmore, 1000 S. Elm St, occurred the death of Abijah R. Bayless, who for several months has been a sufferer from rheumatism, complicated with kidney and bowel trouble. Mr. Bayless was in his 85th year, having been born in Trenton NJ. At an early age, he moved to this county and he has been a resident of this county for 74 years, most of this time having been spent at Alamo, where he was an honored resident. For years Mr. Bayless worked at the trade of shoemaker and harness maker at Alamo, later engaging in the livery business and although his education was limited, he became by hard study a thinking and reading man. He was born a Democrat, but in 1856, he voted for Fremont and since that time he has been an uncompromising Republican. He was a charter member of the Alamo lodge of Masons and is one of the oldest members of that order in the county. In 1838, Mr. Bayless marr. Miss Elizabeth Patterson and to them were born 8 children: four of whom, Mrs. Alice E. Riley of Indianapolis; Mrs. John Skidmore of this city; John G Bayless of Alamo and James F. Bayless of Anderson are still living. A short funeral service will be held tomorrow morning at the Skidmore home at 8 o'clock and from there the body will be taken to Alamo where the services proper will be held in the Christian church and interment will be in the Alamo cemetery. The services will be in charge of the Masonic bodies.
