GEORGE E. BAYLESS

George E. Bayless, 601 Whitlock Ave., 87-year-old railroader who for close to a half-century was identified with baseball in Crawfordville, died at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday in Culver Hospital after a short illness. He was a lifetime resident of this community, a son of Byge and Tamer Ward Bayless and born Jan. 9, 1876. He was married June 1, 1925 to Dora Martin in Crawfordsville. She survives. Mr. Bayless retired from the New York Central Railroad 18 years ago. Prior to his service with the railroad he was employed by the Adams Express Co. He was known throughout western Indiana as the perennial manager of the Crawfordsville Merchants baseball club. Mr. Bayless served in this capacity, which included coaching of several generations of young players, from 1915 until 1961. He also had a hobby not nearly so many people knew about- raising canaries. Surviving besides the wife are a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Smyth of Salt Lake City, Utah, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Bayless. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday at the Bright Funeral Home, where funeral services are announced for 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Carlton G. Christenson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
