Thorntown - Ernest Arthur Birge, 46, died at 1:52 p.m. Friday in Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis, where he had been a patient since Oct. 13, 1965. He succumbed of injuries sustained when he became entangled in a silage grinder on the Lyle Miller farm where he worked near Thorntown. A veteran of World War II, he had served with the U.S. Army. He attended Thorntown schools and had been a farm worker most of his life. He had attended the Weslyn Methodist Church at Thorntown. A native of Thorntown, Mr. Birge was born Feb. 6, 1920. He was married to Wilma Jean Shuck. After her death he later was married to Naomi Veach on Aug. 1, 1964. Survivors include the widow; his father, Charles Birge; a daughter, Betty Jean Birge of Kempton, R.I.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Patty Rodman of Lebanon, Brenda Joyce Veach and Pamela Sue Veach at home; two stepsons, Donald Ray Veach, serving with the U.S. Marines at Pearl Harbor and Ronald Duane Veach at home; two brothers, Arlie Birge of Lebanon and Carl Birge of Thorntown, and two step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the Russell & Hitch Funeral Home in Thorntown at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Robert L. McDuffie officiating. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
