WAYNETOWN – Fern (Jinks) J. Birdcell, 74, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday at his home here. He had been in failing health since last November and was hospitalized in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville for three weeks before he returned to his home last Sunday. Mr. Birdcell was employed for a time by Farmers & Merchants Bank here and for many years worked at the Waynetown Drug Store. He had resided in this community all of his adult life and was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 302 here. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine at Indianapolis. Born May 25, 1890, at Waynetown, he is a son of John and Laura Pierce Birdcell. He was educated in Waynetown and Hillsboro schools and attended Valparaiso University. He was married May 2, 1922, to Leah Hudson. They were married at Crawfordsville. Survivors include the widow; a son, John J. Birdcell of Greenwood, and two grandchildren, Susanne and John M. Birdcell, both of Greenwood. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Servies Funeral Home here with Rev. Myron Hinton officiating. Masonic rites were conducted Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery here. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home. – jlr
