Martha Ann Hughes was born near Young's Chapel 5 miles west of here April 6, 1846. She was married to William H. Boots March 1860. To this union were born 3 sons and 3 daughters: Mrs. Jennie Cornell, wife of Allen A. Cornell was the oldest; she died 20 years ago. The second child, Emma was the wife of John H. Clouser who died 17 years ago. The three sons are Wesley of Indianapolis; Gilmore and Newton residing here and the other daughter, Mrs. Florence Buchanan, wife of Wallace Buchanan at whose home Mrs. Boots passed away about 8:30 TUesday evening after having received a stroke of apoplexy last Friday. At the death of Mrs. Cornell, Mrs. Boots took Mr. Cornell and his 3 little sons into her home and 3 years later when her second daughter, Mrs. Clouser died she took the 3 little daughters of Mrs. Clouser to raise and he it said to her credit that she raised all of these six little orphants to be worthy men and women. But no greater sorrow ever befell Mrs. Boots than when two of the grandsons died over a few years ago. Her husband died four years ago last October. Besides the 3 sons and one daughter, she leaves 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, four brothers and four sisters, Wesley Harvey and Jesse Hughes of near the old home near Crawfordsville; Nathaniel and Mrs. Frank Dunbar of Clermont, Ind; Mrs. Seymour Coyner of this place, Mrs. Washington Coyner of Colfax and Mrs. Matthias Goben of Danville, Ill. Mrs. Boots was a life long member of the Presbyterian Church here. She was a true Christian woman and an ideal mother and grandmother. Her funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church here at 2 p.m. Thursday conducted by Rev. WH Nicely of Linden with interment in the family burial ground in the IOOF Cemetery. -- kbz
