Jeptha G. Boyland, one of Crawfordsville's oldest and best known citizens, died Saturday night at 9:15 after an illness of sev. weeks. The funeral occurred this afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Dr. J.W. Greene. The interment was at the Odd Fellows Cem. Mr. Boyland was one of those numerous early settlers of this county who came from Butler Co, Ohio. He was born in that county near Hamilton, Sept 6, 1822, being the fifth of 10 children, 4 daughters and six sons. Three of the daus. are dead. The subject of this article was the first son to go. In 1825 he moved with his father to Switzerland County, Indiana but a year later came to Crawfordsville where he has since resided. On Christmas Day, 1845, he was marr. to Martha M. Dowden. There were 6 children born, 3 girls & 3 boys, all living except one dau. Mr. Boyland was in his early days a carpenter and millwright but in his later years a baker. He was a member of the Meth. Church and in all things an exemplary citizen. - transcribed by kbz

At 9:15 o'clock Saturday night Jeptha G. Boyland died at his home in the SW part of the city after a brief illness. He was born near Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio Sept 6, 1824 and was the fifth child of a family of 10 children, four girls and six boys. Three of the girls are dead and he is the first of the boys to die. His father, Nicholas Boyland move to Switzerland County, this state in 1825, and entered a tract of land under the administration of JQ Adams. The family lived ther eone year and then came to this city, where the deceased has resided 68 years. He was married Dec 25, 1845 to Martha Dowden and to them were born three girls and three boys, all save the eldest daughter being alive today together with their mother.

Mr. Boyland was a Methodist in his religious views. He was a man of quiet peaceable disposition and had the respect of a large acquaintanceship. In his death the family sustains a serious loss and has the sympathy of many friends. The funeral services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home, conducted by Rev. Tom Boyland and wife, of Elwood and Will Dix, of Bainbridge, were here yesterday to attend the funeral of JG Boyland.

Jeptha Boyland died at his home in this city on last Saturday evening and his funeral was on Monday. He was one of the oldest residents in the city. He was a millwright by trade; but in recent years has been running a bakery on the south side of the city.
