Boungs - Deliah McCafferty

Source: Crawfordsville Star, 16 Feb 1888 p 8

On the 12th of January the good people of this community were called to attend the funeral of one of Montogmery County’s oldest citizens, Mrs. Deliah Boungs.  Mrs. Boungs lacked but a few days of being 75 years of age. She was born Jan 19, 1814 in Fayette County, Ohio; emigrated with her parents in the spring of 1820 to Indiana and settled on Fall Creek, two miles from what was then the village now the city of Indianapolis. At that time the Capitol City contained about a half dozen log cabins with one store and one inn. After remaining two years near Indianapolis, she with the rest of her father’s family, moved to Montgomery County, settled on what is known as the old McCafferty farm where the Crawfordsville and Shannondale Pike crosses Walnut Creek. At that time there was but one house in the city of Crawfordsville. Deliah McCafferty was married to Thomas Boungs in December 1833 who died December 3rd, 1885. The fruit of their union was 11 children,  7 of whom survive their parents and six of whom were permitted to be with their mother during her last illness. She was a kind and affectionate mother, one who never forgot the wants or wishes of her family or friends one that was loved, honored, and respected by all who knew her. One by one the grave closes over the grand old pioneer fathers and mothers of this beautiful land of ours.
