Rose Etta Gilkey Brown, daughter of John R. and Lydia Gilkey was born May 13, 1861 near Waynetown, Indiana and departed this life May 29, 1926 at the age of 65 years and 16 days. Rose Etta was the 5th child of a family of 12 of whom only 4 are now living. They are William Gilkey of Hillsboro; Jay Gilkey of Youngstown, Ohio; Mrs. John Parker, Crawfordsville and Mrs. Charles Armantrout of Lafayette, Indiana. During her girlhood days she expressed her faith in God, and has been known to walk 5 miles to attend Sunday school. She early learned that the Christian life was a life of service to others and this was so nobly expressed in her later years. On Aug 27, 1879 she was united in marriage to Thomas R. Brown and to this union 12 children were born: two of these, Goldie I. and Lillie M. have preceded their mother to that heavenly home; while the husband and other children are: William A. Brown of Kingman; Earnest A. Brown of Fort Scott, KS; John E. Brown of Newport; Leo T. Brown of Indianapolis; Loyd O. Brown of Tangier; Mrs. Harry Starkey of Stone Bluff, Mrs. Bert Swaim of Cayuga, Mrs. Clarence Thomas, Mrs. Reid Hunt, all of Tangier are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. She also leaves 27 grandchildren, one great grandchilld, many other relatives and a host of friends. In her later life her happiest days were spent when the children and grandchildren came home and with great preperations and high expectations, mother and father would wait their coming, but the family circle is broke and mother has gone to her home, eternal in the skies, there she bids them come and join her in that home which shall last throughout eternity.
