John R. Brown, 74, of Waynetown, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at his home. Born September 24, 1924 in Kansas City, Missouri, he was the son of the late Edmund Benedick and Mertha May (Rigney) Brown. He married Lavalla Wininger on August 28, 1945 in Bethesda, Maryland. She survives. Also surviving, are: three sons, Tom Wininger of Hoopeston, Ill., Charlie Brown of Covington, and Kevin Brown of Kingman; three daughters, Carol Souk of Bloomington, Ill., Sharon King of Champaign, Ill., and Pamela Gritton of Waynetown; a brother, William C. Brown of Seattle, Wash.; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one brother. Mr. Brown was a resident of Waynetown for eight years and was formerly of Kingman. He was a 1941 graduate of Shawnee Mission High School and attended Rockhurst College in Missouri. He was a World War II veteran in the Air Force and was a first lieutenant. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rockville, Kingman Lions Club, served on the Kingman Town Board and the Kingman Housing Development. Mr. Brown was owner and manager of the retail grocery Kingman IGA for 28 years and also managed grocery stores in Champaign, Paxton, Gibson City and Danville, Ill. He was involved in the retail grocery business for a total of 50 years. Visitation was Thursday at Shoemaker Funeral Home, Waynetown. Service there on Friday with Rev. Kenneth Majors officiating. Interment in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Arthritis Foundation, Indiana Chapter, 8646 Guion Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46268. – jlr

Waynetown - John R. Brown, 74, Waynetown, formerly of Kingman died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home. Mr. Brown was owner and manager of Kingman IGA at Kingman. He managed grocery stores at Champaign, Paxton, Gibson City and Danville, Illinois and was in the retail grocery business for 50 years. He was a 1941 graduate of Shawnee Mission HS and attended Rockhurst College in Missouri.  He was a WWII veteran, serving as 1st Lt. in the Air Force.

Mr. Brown was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Rockville.  He was a member of the Kingman Lions Club and served on the Kingman Town Board and Kingman Housing Development.

He was born Sept 24, 1924 at Kansas City, Mo to Edmund Benedick and Bertha May Rigney Brown. He married Lavalla Wininger on Aug 28, 1945 at Bethesda, Md. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons: Charlie, Covington; Kevin, Kingman and Tom Wininger, Hoopston, Ill; three daughter, Carol Souk, Bloomington, Ill; Sharon King, Champaign, Ill and Pamela Gritten, Waynetown; a brother, William C, Seattle; 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.  A brother is deceased.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday in Shoemaker Funeral Home, 202 Indiana 25 S, Waynetown with the Rev. Kenneth Majors officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.
