Alpheus Burks, familiarly known as "Grandpa Burks," of this city, died this afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Harry Layson on Jones Avenue after an illness of sevearl weeks from pneumonia and other complications due to old age. He was quite a prominent man of the city and was engaged in timber buying. Mr. Burks was born in Liberty, Union County, Ind 5 Feb 1835 ? he later moved to chicago where he was in the grain business and moved to this city 17 years ago.The deceased was a member of the Christian Newlight Church and Masonic lodge, Mizrah 768 of Chicago and Masonic chapter ...
