Source: Crawfordsville Journal 4-15-1887

James H. BUTCHER died of pneumonia last Tuesday morning at 10 minutes of 11. On Tuesday of last week, he put in a days' work at George Hanna's and in the evening on his way home was overtaken by Dr. Russell who was coming in from the farm with the wagon and was invited to get in and ride. He did so and yet remarked that he was feeling unusually well. That night at the supper table in conversation with his wife, he said that he did not know that at any time he had ever enjoyed better health. That night at about 11 he was taken with a hard chill which was followed by a high fever. From that hour he grew worse and worse until relieved by death. He was born in Ky., April 12, 1831 (?) and was 65 years 11 months 16 days when he died. The funeral took place at the residence by Rev LS Buckles at 2 pm. Wed. Burial was in the Methodist graveyard (Waveland). The deceased was for many years an honored member of the ME Church. His neighbors attest to his high sense of honor and that he was a good citizen and neighbor. - bz
