Wingate - Otto Walker Byers, 78, former resident of Wingate, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday at Home Hospital in Lafayette where he had been a patient for about a week and a half. He had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill for a month prior to his death. Mr. Byers moved from Wingate to the Bowles Nursing Home in Clarks Hill two years ago. Born Jan. 20, 1887, in Vermilion County, Ill., he was the son of John and Rebecca Walker Byers. He was educated in Liberty Corner, Ill., and spent his youth in Illinois. He moved to Tippecanoe County and on Feb. 14, 1917, he married Nottie May Smith near Lafayette. She preceded him in death in 1961. Mr. Byers retired in 1953 and he and his wife moved to Wingate. He was also preceded in death by four brothers. Survivors include three sons, Buford of West Lafayette, Emmett of Wingate and Otto Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Johnson of Jamestown, Ohio; five grandchildren, and four brothers, Clarence and Elberd of Shadeland, Glenn of Taylor Station and Emit of Lafayette. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown. Rev. C. H. Loveland of Brick Chapel will officiate. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery north of Wingate. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Monday.
