ELLEN ENSMINGER CANINE

Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal, Jan 29, 1909

Mrs. Ellen J. CANINE, one of the oldest residents of this city died this morning at her home on South Washington Street from the effects of a complication of diseases. Mrs. Canine was born and reared in this city and during the 76 years of her life she saw Crawfordsville grow from a little village to its present size. In those 76 years she saw the many changes that time wrought places that are now marked by the many beautiful residences of the city were in her early days cornfields. Rock River was a means of transportation of crops and all that was connected with the city of Crawfordsville in its pristine days have been swept away. Mrs. Canine was one of the oldest residents and no doubt the oldest person living that was born and raised in this city. Ellen J. Canine was born April 28, 1833 and was the daughter of Joseph and Jane ENSMINGER, pioneer settlers of this county. She was married to Richard Miles Canine on August 27, 1851 and to this union was born one child, Mrs. Ida Bryant. Dr. SL Ensminger is a half brother and Mrs. Jones Rountree and Mrs. Fannie Hetfield both of this city, half sister and Henry Canine, step brother. The deceased was the last of the children born to Mr. Ensminger by his first wife. In early life Mrs. Canine joined the Presbyterian Church and was always a constant worker in its behalf. The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from her late residence on S. Washington Street. The services will be conducted by the Rev. CH Wilson, pastor of the Center Presbyterian Church. The remains will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pall bearers for the funeral are all nephews of the deceased and will be Dr. Leonard Ensminger of Indianapolis; Hal Ensminger of Indianapolis; Joe Rountree; James Wilhite; Ben Wilhite and Fred Wilhite all of this city. - kbz
