Canine - John Richard - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

Richard Canine died yesterday morning suddenly at the home of his son-in-law, W.K. Wallace, on South Walnut Street. Mr. Canine had retired as usualy Wednesday in apparnetly good health but next morning shortly after 6 o'clock when Mr. Wallace entered the aged gentleman's room he found him lying on the floor. He hastily called Mrs. Wallace and with her help lifted the lifeless body upon the bed. Mr. Canine had been dead only a few minutes when found and was almost dressed, evidently being struck with heart disease while about to don his coat. Richard Canine was born in Shelby County, Kentucky Jan 11, 1811 and there grew to manhood and married with Eliza Gwin he came to Montgomery County in 1832 and here resided until his death. He lived for some years in Brown Township, engaging in mercantile business in Waveland for a season but the most of his life was passed in Union Township. He owned the Henry Wray farm on the Greencastle Road for some years and worked it, but the greater portion of his active life was passed as Justice of the Peace, in which capacity he served with great credit for 32 years. Mr. Canine's wife died in 1886 and five children survive them: John Canine, Robert Canine of Rockville, Mo; Mrs. Nannie Southard and Mrs David White of Pana, Ill and Mrs WK Wallace. Mr. Canine was a consistent member of the First presbyterian Church and was a devout Christian gentleman. He was honored and respected by all, and his life, long and useful is the most fitting monument to his memory. - kbz
