Dr. Thomas Claybourne Canine was born at Waveland, Indiana, Nov 9, 1854 and died at Excelsoir Springs, Mo. Feb 16, 1915, aged 60 years, 3 months and 7 days. He came to Nebraska in 1883 to be Supt. of the Edgar Schools. He chose as his life work, the professions of physician, so he later came to Lincoln and entered the Univ. of Nebraska, from which he was given his MD degree in March 1886. He was married in Lincoln, Aug 10, 1886 to Mary Elizabeth Brown and they removed to Shickney,Neb. where he practiced medicine and started the first drug store. Their only child, Fayette Darlene, was born there, Feb. 24, 1890. In 1893 they moved to Geneva, Neb, where he received the appointment of physician to the Geneva Industrial School, in which position he served six years. In 1904, he retired from active practice and moved to Lincoln with his family. The family home was at 1924 Prospect St. His health gradually failed and he decided to try a change of climate, so they started for California in Oct, 1913. He was not benefited by the change and grew weaker day by day.

In January of this year, they went to Excelsoir Springs in search of relief. There he died after much suffering, Feb 16, 1915. In his early youth, he united with the Baptist church. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, Modern Woodmen and Indiana Association. He leaves a wife and daughter, Mrs. JR Davis of 1219 C St, this city, also three brothers, three sisters and many old, true friends to mourn his death. His was a rich genial nature - he loved compansionship and though his illness lasted several years and his sufferings were intense, he was patient and bore his pain with heroism. Dr. Canine was born on the farm that is now known as the Thorn place, about two miles N. of town. His early education was acquired at Freedom school and he taught school for a number of years in this township. early in life he joined the Freedom church and held his membership there until death. He was the son of James and Sarah Canine and a brother to George Canine, of Freedom; Jack Canine of Crawfordsville; William Canine of Twin Falls, Idahop Mrs. Jennie Lydick and Mrs. Clara Thompson of Crawfordsville; and Mrs. Belle Davis, of Lincoln, Neb.
