Eugene Carr, 42, of Linnsburg, employee of the HyTex Brick Co. northeast of the city was crushed fatally while helping wreck a brick kiln Tuesday morning. Carr was injured shortly after 8 a.m. and died at Culver Hospital before noon. Death was reported due to internal injuries. Carr and another workman, Wallace Davis of New Ross, were using an acetylene torch to cut a steel rod holding together two I-beams that supported a smokestack at the side of the brick kiln they were dismantling. As the rod was severed, the 20-foot tall stack, built of bricks, fell on Carr, striking him across the back and crushing his abdomen. After Carr's death, Dr. Samuel Millis, county coroner, was called and an autopsy was performed. Deputy Sheriff Bill Groves also conducted an investigation. Carr had been an employee of the Hy-Tec firm for 19 years. Born July 26, 1926, near Veedersburg in Fountain County, he was the son of Troy Russell and Martha Arnetta Gross Carr. He was married Jan. 18, 1951, in Crawfordsville to Nancy J. McCown. They lived in Crawfordsville for a time and then moved to Wingate where they lived two years. Eleven years ago they moved to Linnsburg and had resided there since. During World War II, Carr served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He attended school at Sterling and was a member of the Crawfordsville Moose Lodge.
