WILLIAM CARTER

Source: Crawfordsville Semi Weekly, September 3, 1887

The north bound midnight express on the l. N.A. & C. railway ran over and killed William Carter Friday night at the switch at the north end of the long hill. Carter was drunk and was evidently making his way home when caught. He was standing or lying in the center of the track vomiting when struck, and was carried by the cow catcher the length of three rails when his body passed between the main track and switch rail and was ground to atoms from the shoulder to the hips. A dozen cuts are shown on the head and face. Carter was a section hand on the road and has been on a spree for several days. He lived in one of the houses recently built by C.H. Flake, and leaves a wife and two small children. A Journal man helped transfer the body from Loftland & Scott this morning to the home. They are very poor and will no doubt be in utter want before winter is through. The mangled body, the desolate wife and fatherless babes made so by whiskey was a temperance lecture more eloquent than tongues or pen could make it. The funeral occurred on Saturday evening. Interment at Old Town Cemetery.- thanks to Kim H
