Edgar E. Cassida, 42, of Rt. 7, Crawfordsville, was killed Friday morning when the truck he was driving veered off Int. 465 in Marion County and rolled down a 50-foot embankment. The victim, father of four children, resided about five miles west and a mile south of New Market. Cassida, who was en route to Browns Valley from Indianapolis, was killed instantly at 11:10 a.m. when the truck's load, 60,000 pounds of fertilizer, was shoved through the cab of the Farm Bureau Co-Op truck. A preliminary coroner's report listed the cause of death as a broken neck. According to the Marion County sheriff's department, Cassida was driving the 1 1/2 ton truck north on Int. 465 when the vehicle came into contact with a guard rail on the right side of the highway. The truck skidded 477 feet before rolling down the embankment, according to Deputy Sheriff Douglas Larson. There was one witness. A spokesman for the sheriff's department said Friday afternoon that authorities are still investigating the accident in an effort to determine the cause of the truck coming in contact with the guardrail. The truck, which was demolished, came to rest in a drainage ditch. Cassida's body was found on the floor in the cab and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was removed to General Hospital at Indianapolis. Mr. Cassida was born March 28, 1924. He had been employed by the Farm Bureau for more than 15 years. The survivors include the widow, Mrs. Evelyn Cassida; two sons, Larry, 19, a 1966 graduate of New Market High School, and Eddie, 15, a sophomore, and two daughters, Tammy, 9, in the third grade, and Debbie, 7, in the first grade of the New Market Elementary School.
