Source:  Unknown newspaper abt 5 April 1919 (Rockville Republic perhaps)

Mathias Carlin was born in Bullitt County, KY on May 6, 1835; entered into eternal rest at his home in Raccoon Township, Parke County, Indiana on the morning of April 3, 1919, aged 83 years, 10 months and 27 days. His parents were Daniel and Mary Clark Carlin and with them he immigrated (sic) to Indiana when quite small.  He had been a resident of Parke for over 60 years and had lived on his own farm in Pleasant Valley for a number of years.  On June 10, 1873, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Kalley who is left in bereavement. To their union eight children were born, one a daughter, dying in infancy.  Those left to mourn with the wife and mother are: three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Brown of Adams Township; Mrs. Effie Staggs of Ferndale and Mrs. Sophronia Brown who lived at home and four sons, George, Oscar and Homer at home and James of Adams Township, 28 grandchildren, four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Michaels of Plattsville and Mrs. Millie Rigdon of Pine Village, two brothers Thomas and John Carlin of Clinton and a half-brother, William Carlin of Hollandsburg vicinity are also left in bereavement. The deceased joined the Missionary Baptist Church many years ago when it was first organized at Bridgeton and held firmly to the beliefs of that denomination through life.  Mathias Carlin in his prime had the sinewy arm and rugged strength of the early pioneer and helped to clear many of the fine farms of today of the green forests left by the early forefathers. Besides wielding the ax in the timber he followed farming for a lifing. For the past five years his health had been failing and during the few months he grew worse in ? severe suffering.  Through it the devoted wife and children did all possible for his comfort.  Realizing his time on earth was abort he patiently awaited the summons for him to sunny lands beyond the river.  He was a man who lived quiet had been known always as one most industrious men in the town.  He was square in all his dealings, his fellowman and devoted to his family.  By his death is lost a good citizen, a kind loving husband and father.  Funeral services were held at Pleasant Valley Church on Saturday morning at 10:30 o’clock the Rev. __ Collings of Rockville officiating. Burial was made in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. – kbz
