Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal 11 October 1917 p 8

Martha Elizabeth Chamness, daughter of John A. and Mary J. Miles was born Oct 1, 1863, died October 5, 1917, aged 54 Years 4 Days. She was married to Robert Chamness November 3, 1890. To this union was born one son, Albert Ray. In her girlhood days she united with the Presbyterian Church at Alamo. On Jan 19, 1903, she, with her husband united with the Browns Valley Baptist Church in which she lived a faithful and devoted member till she was transferred to the church triumphant. Mattie, as she was famililarly known, was a quiet, unassuming and genial lady and her friends were numbered by her acquaintances. Her father and two brothers have preceded her in death, Stephen A, who died when 5 years old and Ora G who died in infancy. She leaves to mourn their loss a mother, husband, son and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Diggs of Muncie, Ill and Mrs. Sarah E. Zerface of New Market. She was a devoted companion, a loving mother, a true sister and a kind neighbor, but our loss is her gain. She has been a patient sufferer for about two years. She frequently said she was ready andw illing to go when the summons of death should come. Dearest mother, thou hast left us For to gain that blissful rest Of Our great and heavenly Father, Who doeth all things best. There her spirit's shining brightly in our home with God Above, where sin and suffering cannot come but all is peace and love. There we'll meet our dear one, With face and smile so fair; Soon we'll all be happy with her And our Savior over there. It is hard to bea rour sorrow But to us grim death must come, But Christ will heal our bleeding wounds And bid us welcome home, Goodbye, wife, mother, sister, goodbye, This is very hard to bear; But our trouble will be ended In that city bright and fair. - kbz
