Gladys Marie Hawkins Cheatham the daughter of David and Nellie Hawkins was born at Kansas, Illinois March 25, 1905, and departed this life in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville on August 15, 1949 at 8:45 p.m.  She had been confined to the hospital for 16 days and had been critically ill following a stroke.  Her age was 44 years 1 month and 29 days.  

Her early life was spent in the Kansas community.  Later, she graduated from the Utterback Business College in Paris, Ill and was employed there by the Edgar County Supply Company.  While living there she became acquainted with John Cheatham and a romance ripened then marriage on February 1, 1939.  Two children, Joan Marie and John Dale came to bless this union.  

In March 1939, they established their home on a farm just south of Waveland, where they have since resided.

In early childhood Mrs. Cheatham united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Kansas and became a loyal member and a faithful worker.  In 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Cheatham moved their membership to the Waveland Methodist Church.  She has been the teacher of the beginners' class in the Sunday School class for the past number of years.

Mrs. Cheatham was preceded in death by her father, mother and one brother.  She is survived by her husband, John, children, Joan and Dale and the following brothers and sisters, Sherman, George and Willie Hawkins of Kansas; Pall (sic) Hawkins of Peoria, Ill and Wilber of Paris, Ill.  Mrs. Mable Youngs of Smyrna, Tenn and Mrs. Frank Wright of Kansas, Ill.  

Services were held Wednesday at 10:30 in the Waveland Methodist Church with Rev. E.F. Prevo officiating with Rev. Claude McCallister assisting.  Burial was made at Kansas, Ill.  -- typed by kbz
