Clore - Simon

Simeon (sic - I'm more inclined for it to be Simeon but two other obituaries say Simon) Clore, the subject of this sketch was born in Boone County, Kentucky Feb 13, 1821 and died May 27, 1902 aged 81 years 3 months 14 days. He came to Montgomery County with his parents at age 17 where he lived until the day of his death. When young Clore came to this country it was almost an unbroken wilderness but he has lived to see it one of the most flourishing and cultivated counties in the State of Indiana. Crawfordsville, the beautiful county seat was then a mere hamlet in a dense wilderness with a few people, while at this time she has a thrifty population of ten thousand people. Waveland his nearest town existed more in name really, but he lived to see her one of the most flourishing villages in Indiana. He has seen the county surpass even the towns in its improvement's and he has, by his energy and industry, contributed to the growth and prosperity of both. Mr. Clore was a farmer by occupation and had acquired a comfortable fortune. He was twice married. His last wife, Elizabeth survives him. His children left to survive him are the fruits of his first marriage. He was an early pioneer and stalwart citizen. He had a very marked and distinct individuality. He was the personification of frankness. He was truthful under all circumstances and peaceable with all people. He was generous and kind to his neighbors and no one knocked at his door for admission that did not get it. Even the poor tramp who was turned away from many doors could enter the door of Mr. Clore and share his home and hospitality. Mr. Clore often seemed loud and gruff when talking to his friends and if he used harsh and severe words he would end it up with a good natured laugh which indicated his feelings rather than the words. It is no wonder that a heart so large and kind as his should make him a Universalist. He was benevolent enough to want all mankind saved and therefore believed they would be. The great numbers of people who attended his funeral was evidence of the esteem with which he was held in the community. Taking all in all it will be a long time e'er we shall see his like again. MDW

Simon Clore, one of the early settlers of Montgomery Co. died yesterday at his home 4 miles from Waveland just S. of the Shades. He was 82 years old and death was caused by paralysis and heart disease. Mr. C. came here as a small boy from Kentucky and settled with his father on the farm where he died. He was one of the most prominent men in the county and was an uncle of Elijah Clore of this city. - kbz

Simon Clore, a well known resident of Brown Township and who resided near the Shades died last Monday of paralysis at age 82. He was an uncle of Elijah Clore. - kbz
