ANNIE COLLINS

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Review 6 Feb 1875 p 1

(Cincinnati Gazette, Feb 2) -- The funeral of Miss Annie Collins, which took place from the Baptist Church on Sabbath morning was one of the largest ever witnessed in Middletown. The sermon on the occasion, by Rev. Mr. Cull was very eloquent and exceedingly appropriate. The Haden Society joined with the choir in singing the sweet, sad music of the services and the Quixotie Society attended the funeral in a body, thus showing the esteem in which the deceased had been held by each society. 16 young ladies, wearing emblems of mourning who had been especial friends and school mates, followed the remains to the cemetery and when the casket containing the body of their much loved companion had been lowed into the grave, they gathered close around and with tremulous voices sang a beautiful and touching farewell song. ANnie has gone, cuct down in the very bloom of youth and beauty. She bade farewell to father, mother, brothers, sisters and friends, assuring them that she was not afraid to die, and telling them she expected to greet her sister, who had gone before on the other shore. Thus she died. In the midst of grief-stricken weeping friends she calmly and peacefully closed her eyes on things of earth to open them again in heaven. - kbz
