Funeral services for John Ben Collins, 68, retired Indianapolis Star and News Advertising salesman and former Crawfordsville resident, will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Messinger Mortuary in Scottsdale, Ariz., with burial in Acres Memorial Garden there. Mr. Collins died in his Scottsdale home Friday. He had lived there since retiring in October 1963. He joined the Indianapolis newspapers in 1946 after 20 years of operating his own advertising agency there. He was a native of Kankakee, Ill. The family lived for several years at Main and Vance Streets, and he was graduated from Crawfordsville High School and in 1922 from Wabash College, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served overseas and won a battlefield commission as a captain in World War I. Mr. Collins was a former Legion post commander at Indianapolis. In Scottsdale he attended Valley Presbyterian Church. His mother, Mrs. Belle Collins of Crawfordsville, was for many years editor of the Chariot, the Ben Hur Life Association monthly magazine. A daughter of Mr. Collins, Becky Collins, a student at the University of Arizona, is a former national butterfly swimming champion. Surviving besides the daughter and the widow, Mrs. Dorothy Reynolds Collins, are a son, Johnny B. Collins II of Las Cruces, N. M., and another daughter, Mrs. R. C. Cunningham Jr. of Brussels, Belgium, and four grandchildren.
