Blackford Mills Condit, aged 20 years, died this afternoon at a quarter past two o’clock at his room on South Green Street after a painful illness of over three weeks. His parents, brothers and sister were with him at the time of his death and will accompany the remains to Terre Haute tomorrow for the interment.
Mr. Condit was a senior in Wabash College and had been here for five years. He was prominent as a leader in the class room, in literary work and in the athletic circles of the college. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and was president of the local chapter. His sorrowing relatives in their terrible affliction have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
Only a year ago, Mr. Condit’s sister, Miss Emma Condit, a most estimable young lady died at Terre Haute, and this new affliction comes upon his family with telling force.
The death of Mr. Condit is one of the saddest which has occurred in Crawfordsville for many a day. He was a senior in Wabash College on the eve of graduation, full of bright hopes and plans for the future. He had everything to live for and nothing to die for—with warm friends, a peculiarly bright mind and an apparently perfect physique he seemed destined to a career of unusual success and usefulness. Throughout his very painful sickness he manifested a degree of fortitude and patience surprising to his attendants. His untimely death shadows the whole commencement season with a profound gloom for in all college circles and in the city as well. Blackford Condit was known and admired for his many admirable traits of character.
Frank and open in all things, honest alike with his friends and his rivals for college preferment, fearless in his stand on what he believed to be the ground of right, his memory will long be remembered with those who knew him as a true friend and a young man candid and honest in all he did or said. He sought the favor of non one save by his fairness and he had the respect of all.

At 2:15 o'clock, B.M. Condit died at the home of Mrs. Crawford on South Green Street.  For 3 weeks he has been very ill and for several days his young life has hung in the fatal balance.  Peritonitis caused his untimely death at age 20 years.  Mr. Condit entered Wabash College 5 years ago and has always been a faithful and studious scholar.  He was a Beta and won his share of the honors o fhis class and in the field of sports was a leader. He stood well in his relations as a student and in the social circles of the city he was a welcome visitor.  Everyone who knew him was his friend.  Young, boyish and loveable he was a general favorite.  His death coming on the very eve of his graduation is peculiarly sad.  His parents were called here from Portland, Oregon last week where they were attending a church meeting and his sister was called from Elmira, NY, where she has been attending school.  Only a little over a year ago a daughter died and in their last bereavement the family have the sincerest sympathy of this entire community.  Young Condit's death casts a gloom over the entire college and the approaching commencement will be tinged with genuine sorrow. The remains will be taken to his home in Terre Haute for interment.  - kbz

The funeral services and burial of Blackford Mills Condit occurred yesterday. He was the second son of the Rev. B. Condit and died at Crawfordsville Wednesday afternoon in the 21st year of his age. He was a member of the senior class of Wabash College and would have graduated in about two weeks.
An unusually talented and promising young man has been stricken down in early manhood. This is the second time death has entered the lovely home and taken another dear one. The grief stricken parents, brothers and only sister, have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends.
On the noon train from Crawfordsville yesterday there was a large, delegation of his college mates. The chapter of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, and members of the senior class were present. The pall bearers were composed of three members of the fraternity, Blair, Keen and Rose, and three members of the senior class, Thomas, Duckworth and Erickson. The floral tributes were elaborately constructed.
The Rev. R. V. Hunter and the Rev. Mr. Higgins conducted the ceremonies at the house and Mr. Higgins at the cemetery. The music was furnished by W. W. Meyers, Dr. Mail, Miss Hattie Brown, and Miss Hattie Paige.—Terre Haute Express
