Elmer Theodore Coons,78, of Rt. 7, prominent for many years, as a corn producer and who retired in 1969 after more than 14 years as bailiff of Montgomery Circuit Court, died at 3: 55 p.m. Friday in Culver Hospital, where he had been a patient since Sunday. He had been ill several months. Mr: Coons was a member and for many years a trustee of the First Baptist Church here and a member of the Kings David Sunday School Class. He was a 5O-year ember of New Market's Knights of Pythias Lodge and a charter member and for years secretary of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau. He won many awards in corn growing. In 1954 he was a state winner of the five-acre contour contest. Mr. Coons was a member and served on the board of the Soil Conservation District. Judge Howard Sommer appointed Mr. Coons court bailiff on July 1, 1955. He retired Oct. 1, 1969. A native of Browns Valley, he was born July 19, 1882, to Theodore and Nora Schockley Coons. He was married there Dec. 24, 1911, to Flossie Parks, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Lois) Johnson of near Ladoga, Mrs. Paul (Louise) Hayes of near New Ross and Mrs. Dee J. (Loraine) Burns of Crawfordsville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Fern Straub of California, and three nieces. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Powers Funeral Home, with Rev. John Carter officiating, assisted by Rev. William Malott. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Sunday.
