Mary W. Griffin Coons, widow of the late George W. Coons, passed away this morning at 10:35 at the home, 517 east Wabash avenue after an illness covering a period of several months, but a serious illness which began last Friday. A heart attack following the several months of illness was the immediate cause of her death. At the time of her death she was 82 years of age, being born August 30, 1851. Mary W. Griffin was the daughter of John A. and Mildred Wright Griffin who were early residents of Crawfordsville, coming here with her parents from Fairfield, Va., when but four years of age. She was united in marriage to George Whiteman Coons, who preceded her in death in 1912. To this union one child was born, Miss Edith M. Coons, who is her mother's sole survivor and who has been her faithful caretaker and companion throughout the latter years of her life. Upon their arrival at Crawfordsville their home was located at about 409 east Main street, known for many years after as the Kelly home, and her father immediately became one of the substantial, progressive residents of the community. At four years of age the deceased became a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church and has been a consistent, cheerful and faithful member since that time. She belonged to the Woman's Relief Corps of which she was a devoted member, her grandfathers having been soldiers in the Revolutionary war. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Coons is survived by a great many near relatives and hosts of friends to mourn. During all her life Mrs. Coons was devoted to her family, her church and her friends. She was of a disposition that appealed to all with whom she became acquainted. During her later years she still possessed a pleasing vein of humor, always displayed a fondness for and interest in young people. Mrs. Coons was proud of the place of her birth, in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia, and had a great love for Crawfordsville, her home city for 78 years. The funeral services will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 20, at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Paul Benedict, pastor of the First M. E. church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
