WILLIAM SCOTT COONS

Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal, 31 October 1908, p 4

William S. Coons, who was almost eighty-one years old, a well known retired and highly respected farmer, died Friday afternoon shortly after 1 o'clock at his home in Highland, after an illness covering a period of six weeks. His death was due to brain and spinal complications. Mr. Coons was a native of Tennessee, where he was born January 27, 1828. When he was four years of age he removed to this county with his parents and settled on a farm seven miles south of Crawfordsville, near Old Union church. He lived there practically all of his life; coming to this city last May to reside after having sold his farm. At the time of his death Mr. Coons still had the old sheepskin deed which his father secured for the land in the early thirties, when it was originally entered. The deed is signed by Andrew Jackson who was then president of the United States. Mr. Coons was married to Jane Vancleave, daughter of Jonathan Vancleave, a Primitive Baptist preacher in 1852 and this year celebrated his fifty-sixth wedding anniversary. His wife is still living. They were the parents of nine children, six of whom survive. They are Mrs. Sloan Stevens and John R. Coons of this city; Mrs. Caroline Jones, Iuqua, Mississippi; Henry Coons, Mrs. L. M. Douglas, and Mrs. W.V. McCormick, all of this city; The deceased children are Mrs. W/S. Coons, Jr., who resided here, Mrs. Catherine Young, who lived in Kentucky, and George W. Coons, who died in infancy. Out of a family of nine children Mr. Coons and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Van cleave of Wingate were the only remaining ones, Mrs. Vancleave being considerably younger than Mr. Coons. Mr. Coons was a substantial citizen of this county for many years, and had a wide acquaintance. He was a Democrat but never aspired to hold public office. Mr. Coons was admired for his honesty and integrity. The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the late residence in Highland. Rev. Airhart will have charge. The interment will take place at Masonic cemetery.

Thanks Phil C for this one :)
