Cook - Christina

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 24 May 1895

It becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of our beloved friend and neighbor, Mrs. Christina Cook. She fell asleep in Jesus early Friday morning, May 17. She had suffered a year from cancer, but she bore her sickness with patience and told all of them how they should live.

At first her sickness did not seem so alarming and the doctor thought he could cure her, but she gradually grew worse. The night before she died, she reached her arms up and said, “Come Lord, come take me,” and she told her faithful sister, Mary Jane, that it was well with her. What a sad scene to witness the parting of a dear mother and her husband and children, but she passed away as quietly as a babe falling asleep in its mother’s arms. It was a death that we could all feel was a Christian one and it is true, “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.”

She was a member of the German Baptist Church for eleven years and a good and zealous sister. She always wanted prayer and singing when the brethren and sisters assembled at her home. It seemed she did not realize her suffering so much then. She was loved by all who knew her.

Her age was 49 years and 20 days. She leaves a husband, six dear children and two kind and loving sisters with a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.

The funeral took place Sunday morning at 10:30 conducted by Elder Chas. Campbell from Rev. 22:14. It was her request that this text should be selected. The discourse was delivered to a large and sympathizing congregation. The family in their bereavement has the prayers and sympathies of this entire community. - s
