Mary F. Payne COUGER

Source: Crawfordsville Review, October 31, 1905

Mrs. Mary F. Couger died at her home, four miles west of the city Monday afternoon from the effects of a large tumor which had grown to the spinal column just below the diaphragm. The tumor was removed by J.B. Swank, embalmer for D.C. Barnhill at a post mortem held Monday night. The growth had entirely encircled the kidneys and had grown so large day by day that the vital organs failed to do their work and she succumbed. For four years she has felt the ill effects of the disease. About four weeks ago she went to Culver Union hospital to have an operation performed. When an incision was made it was found useless to proceed further with the surgeon's knife. From one of the kidneys almost a half hundred stones were removed ranging in size from a pin head to one three inches long and one inch and a quarter wide at the broadest point.

Mrs. Couger was fifty-two years old at the time of her death. She was the daughter of George W. Payne of Maine and her mother was born in Ohio. She leaves a family of children to mourn. the funeral will occur at Mt. Zion church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. Mr. Snyder and Rev. Albert Maher. Interment at Oak Hill. - kbz
