Crawford - James Brattin

James Brattin Crawford, after a lingering illness, died of a complication of diseases at the family home in this city, early last Tuesday morning.  His age was 49 years.  He was the second male child born in this city, the birth date being September 18, 1832.  His life, with the single exception of a short time in service of the Auditor of state, when Gen. M.D. Manson held the position, was spent here.  He served as deputy when John Crawford, his father, was Postmaster, and in later years was assistant to Isaac M. Vance, Clerk of the Circuit Court.  He was a man indefatigable at labor, and without doubt brought disease upon himself by too close confinement.  His own opinion was that his ailment originated in the Clerk's office of the old Court House.  He was a man with a charitable heart, and a genial manner, was honorable and liberal to a fault.  The funeral took place at St. John's Episcopal church at 11 o'clock today and the remains were consigned to a grave in the Masonic cemetery. – thanks to Kim H
