Mace - Floyd Peterson Crumm, 73-year-old farmer of this community, was killed about 11:20 a.m. Saturday when a tractor he was operating lost a roll pin, ran off a county highway and overturned in a ditch. The sheriff's department said Mr. Crumm was driving a tractor belonging to his son Damon, of near Mace, and headed north on 675E near 175S about 100 yards south of the Alva Buck residence when the accident occurred. A grandson, David, 17, had taken a load of feed for cattle ahead of Mr. Crumm, the sheriff's officers reported, and the latter was following, intending to bring back a disk to the farm where they were working. There were no witnesses to the accident. In investigating it, a roll pin, the first pin below the power steering unit, was found in the road where it had dropped out, locking the front wheels. Sheriff's officers said that after this happened the tractor had gone 49 feet, veering off the road to the driver's left. It barely missed a concrete culvert and overturned end over end into a small creek, crashing over on its side. The right rear wheel struck Mr. Crumm's head. The body was found a few minutes later by Larry DeWitt, employed with a construction firm on Int. 74 nearby, and identified as soon as the grandson drove back along the road. Mr. Crumm was a native of near Darlington, born March 18, 1891 to Rado and Lavina Crumm. He was married Oct. 23, 1912 to Helen I. Paddack at Darlington. He was a member and held a number of offices in the Mace Methodist Church, also a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Mr. Crumm farmed all his life. He was particularly interested in hybrid seed corn development. Surviving besides the wife are a son, Damon P. Crumm of east of Mace; a daughter, Mrs. Edith Linn of Brownsburg; two sisters, Mrs. Della Booher of Decatur, Ill., and Mrs. Emma Vannice of Darlington, and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, William Barton and Samuel Thomas Crumm. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Mace Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Greeley officiating. Burial will be in the Darlington IOOF Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church an hour preceding the services. Friends may call at the Hunt & Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville.
