Hazlett Alva CUPPY, whose serious illness was noted two weeks ago, died in San Francisco on Thursday of last week. The body was brought to Franklin and buried by the side of his wife who died in 1916. He was the son of Rev. William T. and Martha Ann Cuppy and was born in Shelburn Oct 3, 1863. He graduated from Franklin College in 1888. He then went to Europe where he was in Oxford University 1889-90; Berlin University 1890-91; Heidelberg University 1891-92, receiving his doctor's degree from the latter school and presented a these on The Rise of the Anglo-Indian Empire. This book is in the library. While pursuing his studies, he made extensive walking trips. He married Elizabeth Overstreet of Franklin in 1895. He was the founder and edtior of The Authentic Review from 1893-95; Baptist Union 1895-97; director of the Chicago University Press 1896-98; editor of Public Opinion 1898-1908. He was the editor of the first 10 volumes of Our Own Times, a history of the 20th Century. He also engaged in various business enterprises, being at one time interested with his father and brother in a store in Waveland. he engaged in the manufacture of chocolate at Lititz, Pa and at the time of his death was interested in chocolate manufacture in San Francisco. The last year he made an extended trip in Europe in the interest of this business. He is survived by one brother, John W. Cuppy of Lomita, California and by a sister, Mrs. Anna mof South Bend; by two nephews and 3 nieces. Mrs. Bert Kritz is a cousin as is also Mrs. Estella Guy of Las Vegas, New Mexico. - kbz

Hazlitt Alva Cuppy, age 72, one of the most noted graduates of Franklin College died Thursday night in a hospital in San Francisco according to word received here Friday by Franklin relaties. CA Overstreet of Franklin is a brother-in-law of Mr. Cuppy and Mrs. Huh A. Payne and Miss Clara Overstreet are sisters-in-law.  Mrs. Cuppy who died in July of 1916 was a siter of Mr. Overstreet and of Mrs. Payne and Miss Overstreet. Franklin relatives have known for some time that Mr. Cuppy was in ill health. He had undergone an operation after becoming seriously ill on December 14th. They had received no word directly from Mr. Cuppy since that time and their only information came from Harold Overstreet, a nephew and son of Mr. and Mrs. CA Overstreet who is employed by a large oil company in San Francisco. Mr. Cuppy was born at Shelburn, Indiana Oct 3, 1863. Following his attendance in the public schools of that community he came to Franklin College and worked his way through school here. He was graduated from Franklin College with the class of 1888 with the degree of MA an din 1892 received a PhD from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. From 1889 to 1890 he was a student in Oxford in England; studied in Berlin in 1890 and 1891 and then entered Heidelberg. Following a course of study at the University of Paris he came back to the US and became founder and editor of the Altruistic Review.  From 1893-1895 he was editor of the Baptist Union. During 1896-98 he was a director of the University of Chicago Press; was publisher of Public Opinion from 1898-1906 and during his busy life found time to write and publish ten volumes on Our Own Times and History of the 20th Century He is also author of The Rise of the Anglo-Indian Empire. Mr. Cuppy left the editorial field early in the century and became interested in the manufacture of chocolate and was located for years at Litiz, Pennsylvania. He was a director of the Stolwyck Company, a German corporation and represented that big chocolate company in this country up to the time of the WW and then following the war started a factory of his own out in San Francisco where ehe has since resided. He married Miss Elizabeth Overstreet in 1895. She died in 1916. As Mrs. Cuppy is buried in Greenlawn Cem it is presumed that Mr. Cuppy’s body will be brought back here for burial but funeral and burial plans are not yet known to the Franklin Relatives. - kbz
