Robert Custer was born in Cynthiana, KY, March 1, 1814 and died at the home of his son, WH Custer, of this place, Jan 27, 1896, aged 81 years 10 months 9 days. He was left fatherless when an infant and was placed in care of an uncle with whom he lived until 14 years old, when he came to Indiana with his mother. He married Jane Watkins in 1837, with whom he lived happily for more than 50 years. To them were born 8 children, six sons and two daughters. Four sons are still living, two sons and two daughters having passed to the beyond. He with his wife early attached themselves to the ME Church and through the vicissitudes of their long, eventful lives remained faithful and consistent Christians to the last. Their home was always the home of the pioneer preacher. Grandfather Custer’s life was as an open book which all the world might read and be the better therefor. It is something to have lived a life so full of years, and so well that none knew him but to love him. The greater part of his life was spent in Montgomery County, where by industry and economy he secured a good farm on which he lived until about 25 years ago when he moved to Thorntown and resided until the death of his wife, April 2, 1895, since which time he has resided with his son, WH Custer at this place. Funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev. Buckles, of Colfax. Interment at IOOF Cemetery at Darlington. - transcribed by kbz
