Walter N. Haney, 62, a Crawfordsville attorney since 1934, died Friday in a San Antonio, Tex., hospital of complications following emergency surgery for acute diverticulitis. Mr. Haney, who resided at 1410 W. Market St., was on a vacation visit to his son, Dr. Patrick Haney, with the U.S. Army, when he was stricken ill. Mr. Haney was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School and of Wabash College with the class of 1930. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He entered Harvard Law School and received his degree there in 1934. Except for military service in World War II he had practiced law in Crawfordsville since. He served in the U.S. Navy during the war, first as a gunnery officer and later as a contract termination officer in the Navy's legal department. He continued for years as a member of the Naval Reserve. Mr. Haney was Montgomery County prosecutor in 1937-38 and served as city attorney during the administration of Mayor Paul Stump. He served as president of the Montgomery County Bar Association and was a member of the Indiana Bar Association. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite, Elks Lodge, Rotary Club and American Legion. Long active in the Democrat Party, he was a member of the Airport Board and was active in the Pilots Club. He also was a former president of the Montgomery County Cancer Society. While attending Wabash he was a reporter for The Journal-Review and after graduating from Wabash was employed by the Indianapolis News for a year before entering law school. He was a member of Tau Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Born Aug. 10, 1908, in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Walter J. and Harriet L. Haney. He was married Nov. 30, 1938, to Virginia Jane Gray who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Patrick and Ryan; and his mother, Mrs. Harriet Haney of Crawfordsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home here with Rev. Frank Little officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday. Members of the family said memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Fund.
