Mr. Lindsey David Hanna was 84 years old on the first day of this year 1923. He died at the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. F.M. Belton, Ogallala, Nebraska on Saturday evening, March 10, 1923. It was in 1839 that he was born at Waveland in the Western part of Indiana. He remained in Indiana until 1878 excepting during his service in the army. In May 1862 he enlisted in the 135 Indiana Regiment. One large service which he rendered his government while in the army was acting as government buyer of large numbers of horses and mules for use in the army.
All his life he was a stockman. He was intimately acquainted with the late William Duthie, one of the greatest English breeders of Shorthorn cattle and the Cruickshank Brothers, Scotch breeders of Shorthorn. Some of Mr. Hanna's prize winners were lead into the ring by our fellow townsmen, F.M. Belton when he was a mere lad. Mr. Hanna brought the first registered Shorthorn to Keith County. In 1878 he moved to Wichita, Ks and then in 1884 he moved to Beatrice, Neb. When he was 45 in 1884 he came to Ogallala and located two miles W. of town and has made his home since then.
He had no children of his own but brought up and educated an orphan boy and an orphan girl. This girl, Mary E. Conner, a Mason's orphan daughter, graduated from a normal school at Ladoga, Indiana, after which she followed the profession of teaching. He leaves three half sisters and one half brother: Mrs. Jennie Donaldson of Topeka, Ks; Mrs. Josie Milligan of Waveland Indiana; Mrs. Nancy A. Fullenwider of Oklahoma City, Ok; and Daniel W. Hanna of Emporia, Ks. When he was 20 he united with the Baptist Church in his home town and on Easter Sunday 1897 he and Mrs. Hanna united with the Ogallala Congregational Church. They were both very faithful in their attendance upon the services of the Church. During 1893 and 1894 there was much suffering here and the people were very needy owing to bad seasons. Mr. Hanna was in charge of the relief work and secured large supplies of food and clothing thru the governor of Indiana, his native state. Mr. Hanna had over 100 to feed at one time and faithfully cared for the distribution of the supplied which had been entrusted to him.
He was deeply interested in Masonry and was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason by the Annapolis Lodge #127 at Annapolis, Indiana in 1861. In Aug 1886 he joined with 26 others and Ogallala Lodge No 159 received a dispensation and become a chartered lodge. In this lodge he held many important offices, the most important being treasurer. Thru sunshine and shadows Brother Hanna has labored faithfully with his brethern. He was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star. His comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) will greatly miss him. Mr. Hanna's wife died last June after a long period of failing health. In the home life he was always thoughtful and appreciative of all that was done for him with never an unkind word. Mr. Hanna was a cousin of Mark Hanna of political fame. The funeral was conducted at the Congregational Church by the pastor Rev. Warren Morse, on March 12, 1923 at 2 p.m. A male quartet of the Masons: Rev. RF Scott, Messrs. WC Nye, AJ Meese and RA Good all sang "Rock of Ages" and "The Pilot of Galilee." The members of the Ogallala Masonic Lodge were present in a body and conducted the service at the grave. Mrs. Josephine Milligan received word on Monday of the death of her half brother, Lindsay Hanna, which occurred in Oglalla, Neb Saturday. He was a brother of Tyre L. Hanna. - kbz
