Nash - George

Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal Monday, 6 Oct. 1890

Yesterday evening as George, the eight year old son of Wm Nash, was playing in the yard with an open knife, he started for the house and fell. The blade pierced his breast and broke off. Assistance reached him at once and Dr. Ristine was summoned. He probed at once for the blade but was unable to find it. This led to the belief that probably the blade was not in the wound and the scene of the accident and his clothes were thoroughly searched and researched, but without result. The poor lad was unconscious a part of the time and continued to suffer great pain, and this morning Dr. Ristine called in Dr. Eusminger for consultation. An examination was held and the doctors united in saying that the case was the first of the kind they had ever met with and of a most difficult character. Owing to the uncertainty of the blade being in the body the propriety of probing for it is of course rendered doubtful. They left this morning, no light having dawned on the case, to meet again this afternoon to take some decided action.

Later—Just before the doctors arrived at two o’clock little George died suddenly. Even after death probing failed to reveal the presence of the knife blade. A post mortem examination will probably be held. The calamity falls upon the bereaved parents with crushing force, and they have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.

Last evening Drs. Ensminger and Ristine made a postmortem examination of the body of little George Nash, who fell upon his knife Sunday and died yesterday afternoon. They found the blade had penetrated the sternum and broke off close to the handle remaining fixed in the bone. The point of the blade had penetrated the right auricle of the heart and death ensued from exhaustion. The end could not have been otherwise under any manner of treatment, and even if the steel could have been removed, the result would have been the same.

The funeral services of George Nash will take place at the family residence at 713 West Pike Street on Wednesday at 2 p.m. All persons desiring to view the remains can do so between the hours of ten and one o’clock.
