An illness of 5 years following a stroke of paralysis ended in d. for Mrs. Maria Isabel Newkirk 85 at 10 a.m. Mon at her home near Wallace. Mrs. N. was b. Aug 30, 1858 near Wallace, a d/o Thomas & Phoebe Sowers Gooding. On Nov 8, 1885 she was married to Joseph Newkirk near Wallace. She was a member of the Lutheran Church and Order of E. Star at Wallace. Besides her husband she is survived by two brothers, Noah Gooding of Linden, Ind; and Samuel Gooding of near Marshall; a sister, Mrs. Mrs. Mary Alward of Marshall; four grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Fun services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tues at the Lutheran Church near Wallace by Rev John Servies. Bur in adjoining Cemetery, with Grenard & Servies Fun Home in charge MARIA I. NEWKIRK, DIED NEAR WALLACE Veedersburg News Obit 40's B page 97 Mrs. Maria Isabel Newkirk, 85 years old, wife of Joseph Newkirk, died Monday morning at 1 o'clock at the family home near Wallace. She had been ill since suffering a stroke of paralysis five years ago. Mrs. Newkirk was born August 30 1858, near Wallace, the daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Sowers Gooding and was married to Joseph Newkirk on November 8 1885. She was a member of the Lutheran church and Order of Eastern Star. Surviving besides the husband are two brothers, Noah Gooding of Linden and Samuel Gooding of near Marshall; a sister, Mrs. Mary Alward, of Marshall; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, Josie, who died in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Carlisle who passed away in 1937. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lutheran church near Wallace, with the Rev. John Servies of Crawfordsville officiating. Burial was in the Cemetery adjoining the church. 31 Dec 1948.
