Nickell, Elizabeth

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Friday, 16 February 1900

“It is under the shadow of the deepest sorrow of my life that I attempt to address you. A loss so great; a wound so deep has been inflicted that my lips can only whisper, “Oh, where can I go? Oh, what can I do?” Death has entered our household and taken from us our only child—our household treasure—the darling of our hearts. Her illness lasted but one week. We had hopes of her recovery almost to the last and were totally unprepared for the dark hours. Faith Elizabeth Nickell, daughter of Frank and Annie Nickell, was born September 9, 1888, and passed from this life February 3, 1900, aged 11 years, 4 months and 25 days. The funeral services were conducted at the Universalist Church at Whitesville, Monday at 12 o’clock by Rev. B. Grandy, of Indianapolis. Her teacher, Prof. G. S. McGaughey, read a number of her favorite poems on which he gave some beautiful comments. She was completing the seventh year’s work in school, and the pallbearers and flower carriers were the seven girls of her class: Velma Vannice, Rena Oliver, Ethel Davidson, Olive Henkle, Lela Linn, Inez Bratton and Mollie Lollis. Her dear little earthly form followed by a large concourse of friends was taken to the Harshbarger Cemetery and entered while friends sang “Come Angel Band.”

Just a few hours before her spirit passed away, she sang “My Heavenly Home is Bright and Fair.” She was bright and mature beyond her years, having read all the books within her reach, including many standard works. She could converse with anyone. Music was one of her natural gifts and she had also written several stories and poems. Is it any wonder then that her parents looked forward to the time when she should be a bright star in the intellectual world? But alas, their “star” has gone down in the darkness of night and the joy from their bosoms has fled.”
