Oconnell - Cornelius

Source: Crawfordsville Journal 2-10-1900

Mrs. Timothy FELL of this city has received the news of the death at Marion, Ohio of her father, Mr. O'CONNELL. The deceased was well known here where he has frequently visited and several of the residents of this place came with him from Ireland, knowing him in that country. The Marion Star gives the following sketch of his life. Cornelius O'CONNELL, died Feb 9 at his home on the corner of Quarry St. and Ballantine Ave, after a short illness. For a year Mr. O'Connell has been a slight sufferer, but was able to be up and around. Thursday morning after he had partaken of his breakfast, the aged gentleman complained of feeling badly. During the day he once or twice said that he was not feeling as well as usual, but in the evening talked cheerfully with the members of his family and expressed himself as believing that he would soon be all right. Mr. Michael O'Connell, his oldest son, retired at 12 o'clock and inquired of his father if there was anything he desired. The elder O'Connell replied that he needed nothing. At 4 o'clock this morning his daugther went to her father to see if there was anything that she could do for his comfort, but he had quietly passed away at a peaceful slumber. It is supposed that death resulted from heart failure. The deceased was a pioneer of Marion and one of the best known men in the city. He was of a genial disposition, strong and vigorous when in health and his cheerful smile and hearty laugh will not soon be forgotten by his extensive list of acquaintances. Cornelius O'Connell was born in Limerick County, Limerick, Ireland, June 5, 1815. Early in the year of 1847, when the now historical famine in Ireland broke out, he sought the American shores, first taking up his residence in Canada, thence removing to Vermont and afterwards to Syracuse, NY. It was in 1852 that Mr. O'connell with his family arrived in the then village of Marion. He had made his home in this city ever since, raising a family of two sons and four daughters, who with the wife are left to mourn the death of a father and husband. The funeral will take place from St. Mary's church of which the deceased was a devout communicant, Saturday morning at 8 o'clock. - kbz
